Vitalik Buterin, co-founder of Ethereum, stated that true 'trustlessness' lies not only in rules being automatically executed by code, but also in expanding as much as possible the number of people who **can understand the entire protocol from start to finish**. If the protocol is so complex that only a small group of people can understand and maintain it, in reality, it will still evolve into a reliance on trust in that small group. Vitalik pointed out that Ethereum needs to address this issue by **making the protocol simpler**.
