Bhutan is migrating its self-developed national identity system from Polygon to Ethereum. This system enables nearly 800,000 residents to verify their identities and access government services. Currently, the integration between Bhutan and Ethereum has been completed, and the migration of all residents' credentials is expected to be finished in the first quarter of 2026.
Aya Miyaguchi, Chair of the Ethereum Foundation, and Vitalik Buterin, Co-founder of Ethereum, jointly attended the launch ceremony, where other participants included Tshering Tobgay, Prime Minister of Bhutan, and Jigme Namgyel Wangchuk, Crown Prince of Bhutan. Miyaguchi stated that this is the world’s first case of integrating a national-level identity system with Ethereum.
Previously, Bhutan had been operating its national identity system on Polygon since August 2024, and before that, it used the Hyperledger Indy platform.
