The White House announced that President Donald J. Trump has signed an executive order allowing 401(k) investors to access alternative assets such as private equity, real estate, and digital assets to enhance returns and diversify risks. The order requires the Secretary of Labor to review and clarify the Department of Labor’s fiduciary responsibilities and related procedures for alternative asset investments in 401(k) plans and other defined contribution plans under ERISA jurisdiction. It also mandates collaboration with federal agencies including the Treasury Department and the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) to promote regulatory adjustments, while instructing the SEC to revise rules to facilitate the allocation of such assets in retirement savings plans.
