On October 12, the High Court of England and Wales delivered its ruling on the cross-border asset recovery dispute involving over 61,000 Bitcoins linked to the Tianjin Lantian Gerui illegal fund-raising case. It ruled that Chinese investors’ property claims over the involved Bitcoins shall be judged under Chinese law instead of UK law. This means around 16,000 Chinese victims participating in the UK recovery proceedings may not be entitled to gains from Bitcoin price appreciation; the recoverable scope may be limited to principal and interest only.
