According to Reuters, MARISKS, a Greek maritime risk management firm, issued a warning on the 20th that multiple shipping companies have received fraudulent messages. Scammers claimed vessels could pass safely through the Strait of Hormuz upon cryptocurrency payment.
MARISKS stated that unidentified individuals posing as Iranian official bodies sent notices to shipping companies, demanding passage fees in Bitcoin, USDT and other cryptocurrencies under the pretext of processing transit permits. The firm clarified that such messages are outright scams and not issued by official Iranian authorities.
Up to now, Iran has not responded to the incident.
