According to a report by the Financial Times early Wednesday, the Iranian government is planning to levy a toll on oil tankers traversing the Strait of Hormuz, at a rate of $1 per barrel of oil, and payment must be made in cryptocurrency.
Within minutes of the news breaking, prices of major cryptocurrencies surged in response.
Bitcoin briefly rose above $72,700 before pulling back slightly, but still maintained a 5% gain and held firm above $71,700. Solana and Ethereum spiked by 7% and 8% respectively, also giving up some of their intraday gains.
