According to CNBC, Federal Reserve Governor Christopher Waller stated that he had been prepared to support a rate cut following weak February employment data. However, he shifted to a cautious stance and favored keeping rates unchanged due to a deteriorating inflation outlook and growing uncertainty from the ongoing situation in the Strait of Hormuz.
Waller also noted that current policy is already restrictive and does not see a need for rate hikes. He projected that rate cuts could still be possible later this year if inflation cools in the second half of 2026, the labor market continues to weaken, and the macroeconomic environment remains stable.
