The Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC) issued Interpretive Letter No. 1186, confirming that national banks may pay blockchain network fees (also known as 'Gas fees' or 'miner fees') when conducting other licensed business activities, and may hold cryptocurrencies on their balance sheets that are necessary for paying such fees and based on reasonably foreseeable needs. The interpretive letter also confirms that national banks may hold a necessary amount of cryptocurrencies to test other licensed cryptocurrency-related platforms (whether developed in-house or provided by third parties). The OCC stated that relevant activities must be conducted in a safe and sound manner and comply with applicable legal requirements.
