The Secretariat of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) and the IOTA Foundation have launched the ADAPT Digital Trade Initiative. In collaboration with the Tony Blair Institute and the World Economic Forum, the initiative will introduce stablecoin settlement (primarily USDT) in cross-border trade and promote the standardization of digital documents and digital identities. It is expected that the initiative will expand to more countries starting from 2026, with the goal of covering all 55 member states by 2035, aiming to reduce trade costs, curb documentary fraud, and improve the efficiency of cross-border customs clearance.
